We would love to grow our percentage of employee dues-payers to 100%, but our Guild is set up as an open shop; where we represent your interests whether you join or not. Yes, dues are a bite out of your wallet –roughly $5 to $18 per paycheck — but it is an investment we feel is worthwhile. [Because of the Guild's work, we achieved a three-year contract in 2005 that, beyond guaranteed merit raises based on performance, provided everyone with a $150 bonus, plus divvied up $37,600 in merit pay that the company had failed to pay out.]
We know there are “holdouts” who question the value of the Guild, and your volunteer officers (us) are crunching numbers and conducting multiple introspective analyses to examine our budget and the fees that we charge. (What we charge, believe it or not, is cheap … it is just over HALF of what our international “parent” recommends.) Keep in mind that four of the five officers who were first elected in July 2004 (and were re-elected in 2007) inherited an existing organization; all of us are trying to improve it. We, too, want the best bang for our buck.
We know this: we all think having a Guild is of monumental importance. Although we cannot prevent some of the economy-driven cutbacks at the paper, we are a recognized organization that has stepped up to effectively challenge policies that affect every employee.
